Yu Yong received his M.S degree from the Dept. of Computer Science of the China East Normal University in 1986. In the same year, he joined Shanghai JiaoTong University and started his career in the Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering. He is now the vice chairman of the department and also the director of the New e-Generation Technology Research Center ( joint research center with IBM and Hong Kong University ).

His research interests mainly focus on the data and knowledge management area. In the data management and application field, he had done much research on Object-oriented DBMS, OLTP, Multimedia data and groupware. Research projects in this area include:
(1) "OLTP System for the CIMS Engineering DBMS", 863 HI-TECH R&D Program of China, NO. 863-511-9511-001
(2) "Distributed OLTP", 863 HI-TECH R&D Program of China, NO. 863-306-ZD02-03-3
(3) "Object-oriented CIMS groupware components", 863 HI-TECH R&D Program of China, NO. 863-511-9711-004
(4) "Synchronous data compression in multimedia data communication", Shanghai Gov. Sci. and Tech. R&D project, NO. 965115018

He currently conducts research more on knowledge management area, especially on the topic of KM on the Web which includes research on Knowledge Acquisition from the Web, Knowledge Representation for the Web information and Semantic Web. Current research projects in this area include:
(1) "The Representation and Inquiry of Commodity Features using Conceptual Graphs", joint research project with IBM China Research Lab.
(2) "Semantic-enabled Next Generation Web Infrastructure", IBM Shared University Research project.

In addition, he also teaches "Computer Graphics" course for the undergraduate students and "Distributed Object Systems", "Next Generation Web Infrastructure" courses for the graduate students. He has won many teaching awards in the recent years including a second prize of National Teaching Award, two times first prize of Shanghai Teaching Award, a third prize of Shanghai Teaching Award and a third prize of Shanghai Excellent Course Materials Award.

He was the coach of the ACM ICPC(International Collegiate Programming Contest) team of our university. His team won the Asia Regional Contest and entered the world finals for several times. In 2000, his team won Bronze Medal (7th place) in the world finals. In the 2002 world finals, the team coached by him won the Gold Medal of ACM ICPC. This is the first time that an Asian/China team took the 1st place in the ACM ICPC contest.
